A very Snowy Brynmawr

Today the weather decided to come back with a vengence...but the strong minded Rotarians from Brynmawr won't be deterred by that! ok so the Golf Club wasn't the meeting place....but off to Presdients Christines to have a home cooked meal and a very good meeting...again with warmth and friendship...business done, agreements on voting at the Business section of the RIBI Conference and more importantly the collection rota for Tescos sorted for Saturdays Thanks for Life collection.
David Dutson our President Elect is visiting the primary schools today [ Weds] with the Wonderful printed story about a little boy who climbs his own Mount Everest as a polio survivor, great idea by the RC of Knighton and we are grateful to be able to make use of this story giving one to each Junior school pupil in Brynmawr,
Whilst visiting the schools David is also introducing the Year 6 Dictionary presentation idea for each yr 6 pupil leaving primary to head of to secondary school.... hope the head teachers like the idea as much as we do, Literate Youngsters is so important and we want to assist where we can.

Meetings for Foundation

Todays meeting was a frugal lunch meeting...soup and a roll....The difference in our meal costs going to Foundation....then the evening found us all at Diane and Haydns home where we all tucked into a 3 course meal complete with choices! Better than a lot of restaurants...and all the proceeds went to Foundation...todays efforts all about food raised £315.00 for RFUK.....well done to all of us...but a Big thankyou to Diane and Hyadn for all their efforts....can't wait for the next one now....

LifeStraws in Haiti

One of the Rotary Club of Brynmawrs acheivements is the LifeStraw Project which is a tool which provides clean water to those in need...we are pleased to say that through working with LifeBox we have been able to help in Haiti in a direct manner, this exerpt from their web site shows you just what is happening.

We are sending 159 no. LifeBoxes (our complete stock) plus an additional 900 no. Lifestraws, (this makes a total of 1800 no. Lifestraws including those packed in the boxes, enough filtration capacity for 1.25 Million litres of water)

With the help of Virgin Atlantic LifeBox is sending aid to the stricken Haiti. The shipment will be valued at just over £40,000 and will wipe out our complete stock of filled boxes and leave us with only 60 LifeStraws.

Urgent donations are required to help us replenish our stocks.

Every year major natural and manmade disasters affect an average of over 130 million people. Through both disaster and war individuals have lost their possessions, their homes and their families. The majority of disasters happen in the developing world and the frequency of occurrence has increased threefold over the past four decades.

Despite contingencies in place to prepare for them, the necessary resources to help victims are rarely available on the ground in the quantities required when disaster strikes. During the first crucial days, aid organisations are often stretched to the limit. The sudden need for equipment and materials that are not readily available at short notice puts pressure on local infrastructures and limits the ability of relief workers to respond effectively.

When a disaster strikes, people need necessities like access to potable water, food, clothes, and a place to stay. They need essential supplies, basic tools and the many things it takes to rebuild their lives.

Rotary International offers this immediate aid requirement by providing their LifeBox.

The LifeBox is filled with 72 items of tools, clothes, blankets, babycare/hygeine items, toys and classroom materials and is available for both hot and cold climates with the contents lists specifically tailored by the Red Cross, each box providing vital aid for adults and children. Most importantly in each box we place six LifeStraws, kindly donated by the Rotary Club of Brynmawr LifeStraw Project [FiltaStraw- name now changed to recognise the charity name now used ].
